Myeongdong, Hongdae or Gangnam: Choose a Seoul Base by Your Main Journeys

Pick Myeongdong for a central-shopping-oriented plan, Hongdae for an airport-rail-linked west-Seoul base, or Gangnam when your main commitments are on that side of the city. Then check the actual hotel entrance. These are planning recommendations, not a ranking of every property in the three districts.

Myeongdong: separate Line 4 access from the whole neighbourhood

The Korea Tourism Organization connects the main shopping street with Myeongdong Station on Line 4. A hotel marketed as Myeongdong may instead be closer to a different station. Use the hotel’s address to decide which route you will really take. Shopping-area reference.

For an airport-rail arrival, check the connection after Seoul Station rather than assuming the train goes directly to the room. This base makes more sense when central sightseeing and shopping dominate your days than when you need to cross to a distant appointment every morning.

Hongdae: useful airport connection, but choose the right exit

Hongik University Station connects Line 2, the Gyeongui–Jungang Line and airport railroad. Visit Seoul’s Yeonnam park guide starts from Exit 3, illustrating why the station name alone is not the final destination. Hongik University and Yeonnam directions.

Check the walking route for your particular accommodation, including whether you arrive near the airport-rail side or the Line 2 side. If a quiet night matters, ask the property about its immediate street and room position rather than treating all of Hongdae as one noise level.

Gangnam: start with the exact station

Do not use Gangnam-gu, Gangnam Station, Samseong and Sinnonhyeon interchangeably. A booking near one may require another journey to the others. Mark your office, clinic, event or shopping destination first and choose the room from that map.

When comparing passes, note that a Line 2 journey and a Sinbundang Line journey can have different coverage and fares. Use the travel-card coverage guide and the route’s own fare display before assuming a Seoul pass covers every rail leg.

Make the decision with four trips

Score the routes you will actually use
Route Question
Airport → room How many changes, and how far is the bag-carrying walk?
Room → main activity Is this a one-off journey or something you repeat?
Evening → room Will the useful connection still operate when you finish?
Room → next city/airport Does the departure time force an expensive or difficult early transfer?

If one base wins three routes and another wins only a single optional outing, the first is usually the cleaner choice for that itinerary. If two bases are close, use the hotel entrance and room-condition worksheet to compare actual properties.

For a Seoul–Busan split

Do not automatically choose the same kind of base in both cities. An airport-rail advantage in Seoul and an early KTX departure from Busan are different constraints. Compare Busan hotel areas and keep the arrival checklist with your booking details.
