Separate local travel from reserved intercity travel. A prepaid transport card is useful for ordinary city journeys; it is not a seat reservation for KTX or SRT. Start by identifying the service, then choose its payment and ticket method.

Make the route decision before entering the gates
- Find the destination’s Korean name or road address in your map.
- Select the correct station/service result, not a nearby business with a similar name.
- Read the line, direction, transfer station and final exit.
- Check whether the route’s stairs, walking distance or last connection fit your luggage and timing.
- Only then buy a ticket or enter with your transport card.

Understand one transfer calculation
Seoul lists an adult subway transport-card base fare of ₩1,550 and explains that integrated transfers use the highest applicable base fare, with distance supplements where relevant. For a simple qualifying Seoul bus-to-subway trip within the base-distance range, a ₩1,500 bus fare followed by the ₩1,550 subway base does not necessarily mean paying ₩3,050. The base component is reconciled to the higher applicable fare. Additional distance, invalid transfers and excluded services change the outcome; do not count every boarding as a new full fare or assume every transfer is free.
Do not carry Seoul pass assumptions into Busan
Check local products separately. Busan’s tourism guidance notes that its Metro commuter passes do not cover the Donghae Line or Busan–Gimhae Light Rail Transit. An ordinary compatible transport card and a city-specific pass are different products. Busan transport overview.

If you choose the wrong entrance or miss a stop
Ask station staff before repeatedly tapping or buying another ticket. Keep the original card/ticket ready and explain the station where you entered. If you miss a bus stop, get off at a suitable next stop and check the return direction from the actual stop position; do not cross a busy road toward a map pin without checking the crossing.
For intercity travel, verify the station name twice
Use the official Korail or SRT booking route, or the operator shown on your reservation. Check the departure station on the ticket against your map, then leave time for the station interior. If your first choice is unavailable, follow the sold-out train alternatives rather than buying a ticket from a different station without recalculating the transfer.
