Korea Train Delays and Cancellations: Keep the Ticket, Check the Notice, Choose the Next Step

Keep the original ticket and establish what happened before buying a replacement. A train running late, an operator cancelling a service and a passenger choosing not to travel are different situations. Their refund or compensation process may differ.

Operator cancels the service Cancellation notice and ticket/booking reference Follow that operator’s disruption instructions before treating it as a voluntary return.

Use the seller and operator on your ticket

Retrieve the booking through the channel where it was issued. A third-party confirmation can require a different customer-service route from a ticket bought directly from the railway. Keep the original reference, payment record and notice together.

Use Korail for its services or the SRT ticket/refund guide for SRT. Do not apply a percentage copied from one operator’s table to another ticket.

A concrete SRT timing rule

The SRT guide says website refunds are available before the printed departure time; after departure, station handling is required, and a refund cannot be assumed after the printed arrival time. Charges depend on return timing. Check the current table and displayed result rather than relying on a single “free cancellation” claim. Reviewed September 7, 2026.

SR lists 1800-1472 for customer service, with English ARS option 7 and counselling hours of 09:00–18:00. Do not assume staffed support is available at every late-night hour. SR customer-centre information.

Protect the next fixed item

  1. Write the airline check-in, last bus, hotel-entry or event deadline you must meet.
  2. Calculate the delayed train’s likely arrival plus the onward transfer, using the current information available.
  3. If it no longer fits, compare a replacement from its actual departure station or terminal.
  4. Resolve the original ticket’s status and save the confirmation of any return/change.
  5. Tell the accommodation or next provider about the changed arrival where needed.

Compare the whole replacement journey

A flight option includes airport access, the carrier’s deadlines, baggage and the final ground transfer. A bus option includes travel to the correct terminal and road conditions. A seat that is available but cannot reach the deadline is not a useful replacement.

The Seoul–Busan alternatives guide provides a comparison worksheet. For a weather-related disruption, follow the official-notice workflow rather than assuming a different operator is unaffected.

Keep evidence after the journey

Save the ticket, disruption message, refund/change confirmation and any replacement receipt. A refund request, a refund approval and money arriving back on a card are separate states. Ask the issuer or seller about settlement timing if the records do not agree.

This page explains the process and cited SRT rules. It does not determine an individual compensation entitlement or promise that a replacement expense will be reimbursed.
